This is a stained glass shop with the Artspace Lofts in the reflection.  I love having stores that just sell stained glass.  We also have a map store!  Another reason why I love the River Market!

The 18th of January was very foggy.  This is from the fire escape on my building looking east towards the City Market.  The trees right below the railing are in the dog park.  From the fire escape, when I looked south, I couldn't see any of the buildings in the loop, which is about 4 blocks away.  It was a crazy looking night.  This photo was taken with a fisheye lens and was unedited.

1.16.10

Today was a pretty cloudy, overcast day.  That is why behind the National sign, it's empty white space.  That's what the sky was like today!  This is one of the walls of a huge, antique mall and it faces the highway.  It's one of my favorite places to take senior pictures!

Indoor shot.  Elevator buttons.  I think I will do mostly outdoor shots this year of the River Market, but I will be doing some indoor ones as well.

1.13.10

This picture is of a mural on the side of a antique mall.  I love the cars in front of the mural and the contrast between the past and present.  The antique mall is an awesome store to wander around in.  They have some great stuff!  It was such a nice day today to be out taking pictures!  I think the high was around 40!

1.12.10

Another picture at the end of the day!  I'm so amazed at how many awesome things there are so close around me.  This is why I love photography.  And, this is why I love the River Market.

1.11.10

I apologize for the delay.  This picture was actually taken today, the 11th around 4p.  It's a picture taken of the Missouri River.  The white pieces are floating pieces of ice.  They were floating at a good clip down the river.  It was an amazing sight to see!  This is another surprising benefit to me of this blog...seeing things I might not have seen.  I would definitely encourage you to go out and take some pictures.  Try and push yourself.  Make a photo project for yourself.  My love of photography really grew when I took a photography class in college.  I was forced to go out and take photos for projects and it really got me out of my comfort zone.  I hope this blog does the same thing again.  And, I hope it encourages you to go out and do the same.

Another alley shot.  Another nature vs. city shot.  Another cold night.

1.8.10

Another cold day.  When the temperature is 5 degrees outside and the wind chill is -6, you just have to get creative.  Today was probably the first day I could feel the cold in my bones.  So I did get creative.  This picture was actually taken from our apartment.  I used a tripod and had an 8 second shutter speed.  The red curved line in the middle of the picture is actually the taillights of a car.

1.7.10

Another bitterly cold day.  I have a series called "From Above" and it's different shots taken from a high vantage point.  I love having a photo of something that I've seen a million times, yet when you do something so simple as change the point of view, you have a completely different photo.  The above shot is a round picnic table with 3 curved benches and a cleared path to the left of the table.

1.6.10

This is not one of my favorites, but I do like how the snow is illuminated by the bright lamp.  I also love this angle because there are trees and nature in front of a cityscape.  That is one of the things that I love about the River Market.  The contrast of nature and city; of grass and concrete.

1.5.10

I love b&w.  I was really surprised by this one because I thought another shot was going to be the "keeper".  It's always good to really look through your photos and try to find a hidden gem.  Who knows?  You might have taken an awesome shot!

I also love alleys.  They seem so quiet even during the middle of a bustling day.  I have an alley that I love to use for my photo sessions.  It's not this one, but I will be posting pictures of it sometime this year.

1.4.10

Another cold day.  I'm averaging about 10 pictures a day, which is quite low actually.  I will take about 4-500 pictures per hour and half photo shoot.  I'm not sure if people realize how many pictures a photographer will take to get that one shot.  Most of their pictures will land in the trash bin.  That has been one advantage the average person has with digital photography.  They are able to take tons of pictures.  However, I don't think most edit and really go through their photos.  I know I've been guilty of that.  That is another benefit of this project of mine.  It's forcing me to throw away shots I've taken and really find the best one.

For this photo, I was going for the ordinary.  I love patterns and lines.  I love taking a picture of something ordinary and making it beautiful.  There are so many ordinary things in our lives that are really beautiful if we stop and look at it.  Many times it takes just looking at something from a different angle.

Also, this photo was not edited much.  I just did a "boost color" one level up on iPhoto.

1.3.10

I was finally able to get outside during daylight to take this picture.  I saw this tree and it reminded me of Christmas balls hanging on a Christmas tree.  The ironic thing is that the "balls" are actually spiny balls of hurt!  This tree also made me think of after Christmas when I see many trees dumped on the side of the road and with all their needles gone, they look like road kill.

A little editing made the background flow from a pinkish glow on the left to a blueish glow on the right.

1.2.10

Another cold night.  A little more wind and slightly spitting snow.  Used a tripod tonight.

Also, to give some background info on my camera/programs, I use a Nikon D40 and upload to a Mac.  I use iPhoto for my editing.  If you are looking for a camera or a computer, I really love my Nikon and Mac.  They have both been very good for me.

1.1.10

Here we go!  The first picture of the year!  I will also write a little bit about where I took the picture.  A little background info, if you will.  I also want to be honest and expose photography for what it is and for the tricks that photographers can use.

For example, this picture was taken around 8:30 p.m.  The temperature right now (an hour later) is 8 degrees and the wind chill is 6 below.  Needless to say, I only shot 6 pictures.  Most were blurry because I was shivering.  So, with a little editing....ta-da!
